Would You Use A Company Provided Employee Assistance Program?

Companies often provide Employee Assistance Programs to Employees. They are to provide confidential assessments, referrals, and short term councelling. They deal with things like job stress, marital and family issues, alcohol, and drug dependencies, depression, and more.
Would you use such a program? Even though they say it’s confidential, would you trust that your problems aren’t exposed to your boss or senior management of the corporation you work for?

I have used an EAP program before. I trusted the confidentiality of the program, as they have to abide by the same laws as any other provider. However, I didn’t have a very positive experience, mainly because The counselors that were provided were not very experienced. I am a counselor myself (yes, even counselors need counseling sometimes) and I just didn’t click with any of the providers that were offered. I suspect that the very competent and experience counselors are not working for EAP programs, but I don’t know if that’s really the case.

Yes, because I have worked for an agency that provides such a service. No information can be released without a signed release. With the new Hippa laws…this has become even more secure. Just go over your policy to make sure what the service covers and for your peace of mind, talk over with the provider your concerns about privacy.
