I Need To Leave My Stressful Job Due To Major Health Concerns But…?

…but I only have 4 months at this job. I know, 4 months may seem like nothing, but my health has recently become a major issue. I have had stress problems in the past, that’s one reason why I developed problems so quickly. But never have I had a job like this: 45 hours a week minimum, an office team of 4 handling over 1,200 clients with that number growing rapidly everyday, angry clients complaining everyday for not being processed quickly enough (we try desperately), not being able to meet those clients’ needs due to massive amounts of tasked constantly being thrown at us with many many short deadlines, and worst of all, a management that puts us at fault for any failure (even if the clients were at fault). I even try to go to school at nights but my grades have suffered due to exhaustion. I have tried “bucking it up”, but then I started feeling tightness in my chest. When I tried to confront a manger on this, he said, “Try and relax, we don’t want you to be a liability for us.” It’s only going to get worse as the management pressures us to perform better because they strongly believe that we have enough time and staff to fulfill all of our task and a lot more (I’m sure they are just saying that so they won’t have to hire more staff due to $, even though the company is rich). Also I get a lot of pressure from external forces telling me, “That’s life”, “Just deal with it” and “At least you have a job.” Yeah, I get that, but is it really worth my health? I like my job, just wish I wasn’t doing the job of 5 people. I really need to quit before I get hauled away in a stretcher, but with only 4 months on the job, I’m afraid nobody else will want me due to “lack of commitment to a job”. What can I possibly do to help my situation? Is there any hope for me?

  • If school is your top priority, start looking for another job. Management doesn’t sound supportive. Stand up for yourself ( as you did ). Document this. If this management attitude persists you can go out on stress disability, but you will have to start seeing a doc. and let him/her know what’s going on.
Your health is your top priority; education is second. I gave you some ideas above. If you decide to quit, don’t worry about the “lack of commitment.” Think of it as a mature, responsible decision in that you recognize your limits and you refuse to work in a high stress environment without support.
Above all, take care of yourself. i know this can be tricky, because you have to make money-but maybe you can do it in a calmer place-
    or, go part time.
    I wish you the best.

Health comes first. That job is not worth it. I know some people who quit their high-paying jobs exactly because they didn’t want the stress anymore. What’s that job going to do to you if you get a heart attack out of stress? The company obviously doesn’t care for its employees if they think you can all handle the job well without losing your minds.
Start looking for a different job, please.
