I Am A Normally Calm Person (with Treated Bipolar) But Right Now I Am Just So Tired And Stressed Out…?

I am in college and have alot of work to do before the end of the month. I have been taking my meds, attending Doc appts, eating right, sticking to a reasonable time management program and trying to get enough sleep. But my bleeding housemates are keeping the stupidest hours and making it hard for me to get enough sleep, I have severe insomnia and lack of sleep is one of bipolar triggers. I have my own room with thick brick walls and I use ear plugs most of the time except now I have an ear infection and my doc has said I can’t use them. Can someone give me some encouragement please….

You have a few options. The most obvious (which you’ve probably already tried) is to ask your housemates to hold it down until the ear infection clears up. Another thing that helps me is a fan or something similar to block out ambient noise. (This one really does help if you can get used to the fan.) Or, talk to your pdoc about taking a low dose of something sedating like Seroquel. If the noise is more irritating and distracting than usual, it might be signalling the start of an episode. In that case, some Seroquel or other anti-p is the best way to shut it down and give you some sleep. Last resort, sleeping pills. I do the fan, low dose of an AP, and sleepers when needed. They help.

Aww hon, keep going! It’ll get better. Remember; everything runs in a circle. Bad things give way to good things, then good things turn into bad things again. You sound like you’re in the middle of a bad things cycle.
The good news? Good things are coming your way soon.
In the meantime, I wonder if you could look into those big, old style earphones that sit around your ears instead of inside them? You could listen to a “white noise” tape with those comfy earphones as opposed to just plugging your ears up. Not only will this drown out your stupid roommates, the white noise will also help you sleep.
