I’m 21 and still living at home and I want to move out. I can’t live with any of my friends because, frankly, I can’t stand the way that they live. My job is preventing this and the only way I can get a new job is to get my car fixed as there is no place on the bus line that is close enough to walk home from if I miss the last bus of the night and my current non-diploma, high school failure, not drop out, status is currently preventing me from getting any of the better jobs that are on the bus line. I work in a McDonald’s that is only a 30 minute walk from home. If I go into management at my work, I should make enough to get my car fixed, which in turn will allow me to get a new job. The only problem is, I’ve been working at a McDonald’s for the past 5 years and have never had any direct interaction with the customers, I work in the back, “flippin’ burgers,” if you will. The stress in the back is bad enough, but I’ve seen what being a manager at that McDonald’s does to a person. So, I have two question: should I go into management, until I get my GED, to get my car fixed? If I do choose to go into management, how would I mentally prepare myself for the stress that is to come?
If there is any confusing parts of this, I apologize, I went through and added stuff that I forgot to include into places where I thought seemed appropriate.
Thank you for your help, any answers relative to my questions will be greatly appreciated.

Do not give your personal info or any money to work-from-home scams.
They are all gimicks.
Get your high school GED. Otherwise you will go almost nowhere in life. Just do it no matter what. See if there’s a way to do it on the internet. The older you get the harder it will be to continue.
You are lucky that you have parents who seem willing to let you live in their home even though you are way over 18 or 19. Take advantage of this luxury and tell them your plan to finish highschool. Hopefully they will be supportive. I am not sure why you dropped out. Most communities have independent study programs just for people like you to help you complete your education.
Good luck!
My advice to you is if the opportunity for the management program has come up, then take it. You’ve seen what being a manager at McDs does to a person so you also have seen what you can do to prevent those things from happening… 5 years in the back flipping burgers has given you plenty of opportunity to observe and see how people are treated, how you want to be treated, and how you should treat others.
I would not consider going into management for the sole purpose of getting your car fixed.. instead, look at it as an education to add onto your resume along with the GED you are going to get.
Once you’ve had experience in management, you have employable skills that will open the doors to other industries… Being able to manage others is a learned skill that can be used in all kinds of industries. Flipping burgers is not.
I think you’ve already begun mentally preparing yourself for the stress that is to come…. you are aware that it is there, but guess what? Stress is everywhere… it just depends upon how you deal with it. I, personally, am motivated by the stress of impending deadlines…. on the other hand, the stress of flipping a burger would about kill me… that’s why I leave the cooking to others!
It’s good to see that you want to advance yourself… McDs is just a stepping stone… just make sure and follow through with the GED… plus, if I am not mistaken, I think McDs offers tuition reimbursement as well, so once you’ve got the GED, you can take some college courses…. good luck!
