Being A High School Teacher?

I currently am about to finish my degree in Business Management with a minor in Mathemetics and have been contemplating a career as a secondary math teacher.
Could I get any info regarding pay, stress levels, etc?

My mother has been a teacher in 3 states for about 25 years. ( CT, NY, FL) It is VERY stressful. The vacations/summers/holidays/etc. are great, but one needs them to resume any kind of semblance of normalcy. (i.e. not go over the edge)
The pay is AWFUL in Florida, Better in CT., and best in NY. In CT. teachers don’t put in to Social Security and must work 30 years to get any kind of ‘decent’ pension. (so they won’t GET social security either) Florida does not ever give permanent health coverage- and their pay is low. (about 30K below NY). Ny is best, as they will give one permanent health coverage after 20 years (subject to change), and the salaries are decent.
You really have to LOVE helping and working w/ kids….it’s not a job for the money, benefits, or anything else….it isn’t worth any of it unless you LOVE being a ringmaster of a 3 ring circus…hoops of fire, elephants stampeding, and lions loose…all at once. Also, administration is painfully critical and unappreciative…..you’ll get no backpats there…..you gotta love it…..it’s a life sentence.

Your minor in mathematics isn’t enough. You need a bachelor’s in your subject area and then a masters in education or a teaching certification.

Oiy, I’ve been a secondary teacher and I’ve worked in the private sector. Working in the private sector allows greater pay, more respect, less stress, fewer work hours after leaving work (but this depends on your discipline – I had to grade English papers all the time). I don’t think I’d ever go back to teaching, but each person is different.

That would be a foolish, idiotic move on your part. You will get tormented by the little hell-raisers and all for near poverty level wages. Screw the math part and join some big company or start your own business with the skills that you learned towards your major of business. I’d even rather be a stockbroker than a schoolteacher.
